Why do you play bowls? That’s one of the key questions Bowls England is asking in this year’s National Participation Survey that has been organised in conjunction with the Bowls Development Alliance (BDA).

The survey, which takes less than five minutes to complete, asks a number of key questions and the combined results will provide a detailed breakdown of participants within the sport.

Results will be used to inform future development of the sport in conjunction with the BDA and other key stakeholders.

Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, said: “It is vital for the future of the sport that we hear the views of those inside the sport currently, those who no longer play and also those who have not yet been inspired to take up bowls. By hearing from these three different groups of people, Bowls England and the BDA will be in a significantly enhanced position when working to increase the numbers of people participating in our sport. I would urge all of our members to take a few minutes to complete the survey.”

Notice from Bowls Development Alliance (BDA)

We are delighted to inform you that the Bowls Development Alliance have been successful in applying to the National Lottery Awards in the Sport category with Just Bowl. From over 600 applications, Just Bowl came 3rd in the public vote.

Just Bowl has had an impact in such a short period of time and to see how many individuals and organisations have come together to ensure more people get involved in sport at all levels. Just Bowl has been delivered for the last 18 months, engaging over 1700 new participants in to the sport of Bowls. Over 600 of those are participants with a disability. This delivery has been a key factor in our progress towards the targets set within our Whole Sport Plan 2013-2017. Throughout this time, we have worked with 74 different organisations across 138 projects nationally, training 151 new session leaders, who now deliver within their own places of work. We are immensely proud of the developments with Just Bowl and grateful for the support and engagement from all of our partners and deliverers. We have a fantastic opportunity to promote not only Just Bowl, but the sport of Bowls nationally. For further information on Just Bowl and to see some of the incredible people we’ve met along the way, you can visit our website: www.justbowl.org or our Twitter feed - @BDAJustBowl

At the Bowls England AGM in February 2016 the addition of three National Championships to begin in 2017 was announced. Namely being;

Men’s Senior Fours (55 and Over on 1st April annually) – 21 ends/Two bowls each player

Women’s Senior Fours (55 and Over on 1st April annually) – 21 ends/Two bowls each player

Men’s Junior Pairs (Under 25 years on 1st April annually) – 18 ends/Four bowls each player

These new championship events will be administered within each county as per all other National Championship events, with the winner ONLY from each county qualifying for the National Championships at Leamington Spa.

Bowls England recommends that the start time for the Junior Pairs will be no earlier than 7pm on a weekday (unless mutually agreed otherwise). The two players may be from different clubs, but they must both be affiliated to clubs within the same county and have entered all other National Championship events from the same county.

All four players in the Senior Fours must come from the same club, and must represent that same club from which all other National Championship events have been entered. The National Winners of the Senior Fours will be England’s representatives at the following year’s British Isles Championships. The Tony Allcock Trophy (60 and Over on 1st April annually) will continue in its current form.
